Arizona residents want it both ways: tough immigration law and amnesty
Jul 26, 2010
A majority of the citizens of Arizona are supporters of SB1070, the tough new law that allows police to ask someone about immigration status with "reasonable suspicion" they are in the country illegally. Fifty five percent favor the law which will take affect on Thursday, while 36% oppose it. About two thirds of Arizonans want tougher security at the border.Even more Arizona residents want illegal immigrants to stay if they have no criminal record, according to the same poll by the Arizona Republic. WestGroup Research found that 62% want amnesty for illegal immigrants who contribute to society, while only 31% want illegal immigrants to go home to their native lands.
The poll suggests Arizona voters would like to consider a more multifaceted solution to the immigration issue. The poll of 616 adults was conducted between Jun 30 and July 12 of this year, with a 3.89% margin of error.
Utah's first immigration summit, held last week in Salt Lake City began the conversation about how to solve the problem of illegal immigration in the state. Ideas being considered range from a law similar to the one passed in Arizona, to guest worker programs. Utah Governor Gary Herbert has asked a diverse group of Utahns to listen to each other and consider a solution that is right for Utah.
